The B1/B2 visa is for business (B1) and tourism or family visits (B2). The F-1 visa is for full-time academic study at a US school that is approved by SEVP.
Every applicant completes the DS-160 online form, pays the visa fee and attends an interview at the US Embassy in Dhaka. The consular officer decides on the spot whether to approve.

B1/B2 visitor

F-1 student
- Accepted by a school approved by SEVP, with a valid I-20.
- Proof you can pay the first year and have funds for the rest.
- The intention to return home after your studies.

- Valid passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay) and old passports
- DS-160 confirmation page with barcode
- Visa fee payment receipt and interview appointment letter
- One recent photo meeting US visa photo rules (5 × 5 cm, white background)
- Bank solvency, bank statement (6 months) and tax return
- Job ID / NOC, or trade licence for business owners
- Form I-20 issued by the university and SEVIS fee receipt (student)
- Academic certificates, transcripts and test scores such as IELTS / GRE (student)
Bring originals of everything, plus a neat set of copies, to the interview. The officer may ask for only a few papers — or none — but you must have them ready. Keep your answers short, honest and consistent with your DS-160.

The US embassy makes every decision. Visa fees, the interview process and rules can change without notice — always confirm on the official US Department of State website.
- Do not submit false or borrowed documents. A fraud finding can bar you from the US permanently.
- Being refused once does not mean you can never get a visa, but your next application should show what has changed.
- Keep your interview appointment confirmation safe — you cannot enter the embassy without it.

Is the visa interview compulsory?
For most first-time B1/B2 and F-1 applicants, yes. Some renewals qualify for interview waiver, but that is the exception.
How many years will my visitor visa be valid?
The consular officer decides validity and the number of entries. It is not the same for every applicant.
When should a student apply?
As soon as you have your I-20 — an F-1 visa can be issued up to 120 days before your programme starts.
Can I work on an F-1 visa?
Only in limited ways, such as on-campus jobs and approved training programmes. Off-campus work needs specific permission.
What happens if my visa is refused?
You get a reason under the law. You may re-apply, but only with new or stronger evidence. We review the refusal with you first.
